President Trump has lifted fines against nursing homes that inflict injury or death to a patient.  I feel this is one of the most heinous decisions that has been made.  The Medicare director felt that their oversight committee could not do two things at once : police for mistreatment of patients and work on positive goals.  For some reason, Mr. Trump felt that lifting all fines for nursing homes was a way to ease the non-existent burden of Medicare and its affiliates to care for patients.  It was a huge bonus for the nursing home industry- but what about the patients?  In 2012, the GAO (Federal General Accounting Office) stated there were close to 37,000 Veterans in nursing homes. Who are now not protected from injury or death inflicted by nursing home staff.  Where is your Veteran?

Here are some links:

U.S. GAO - 2012 Report Veterans Administration Nursing Home Workload

New York Times - Article about the lifting of fines (on Christmas Eve  December 24, 2017)

From that article: "Dr. Kate Goodrich, director of clinical standards and quality at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said in a statement that unnecessary regulation was the main concern that health care providers raised with officials."

In my opinion, a fine for injury or death to an elderly civilian or Veteran is not a regulation, it is a just punishment for the staff or business that inflicted the harm. This policy reflects the lack of true care for our Veterans in nursing homes.
